Dr. Nicholas Kondon sometimes uses dental fillings to repair a tooth with a small chip or cavity. If you struggle to maintain a diligent oral hygiene regimen, a new cavity could form on the same tooth. Sometimes there simply isn’t enough healthy tooth enamel remaining to secure a second dental filling. This is even more likely to be the case if the tooth in question is in the front of your mouth or the previous dental filling was large.
To treat a tooth in this condition, Dr. Nicholas Kondon might recommend using a dental crown. This restoration treatment will take two separate appointments to replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a special dental material.
The process will start by numbing the tooth before using a drill to remove the previous dental filling and any remaining tooth enamel. This leaves behind a small made from the underlying dentin layer. This dental abutment which will eventually anchor your new crown. Your dentist will then prepare a detailed impression of the abutment before securing a temporary crown over it. The impression will then be sent to a professional dental lab where your dental crown will be created.
A member of Dr. Nicholas Kondon’s staff will call you to schedule the second appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed before he cements the dental crown onto the abutment. If you live in Concord, Massachusetts, and you have a previously repaired tooth that you suspect has a new cavity, you shouldn’t delay in calling 978.369.9090 to have it treated at Nicholas P. Kondon, DMD.
