When you lost one of your teeth, you likely put it underneath your pillow and awoke in the morning to find some money in its place. At least that’s likely what took place if you lived in the United States. Have you heard that other countries also have unique traditions regarding what to do with baby teeth once they’ve been lost?
While we normally place the tooth underneath our pillows, little ones in Sweden and Norway place their teeth in a glass of water. (We hope no one drinks this it! Yuck!) Due to the soft nature of pulling the tooth out from underneath the pillow while the child is asleep, a small mouse does the Tooth Fairy’s job in Italy, France, and Belgium. In Scotland, these traditions merge: a white fairy rat uses coins to purchase the pearly whites from the children. In Greece, Mexico, and Turkey, children throw their baby teeth onto the roof of their houses after wishing aloud.
