Enamel Erosion: Prevention Techniques

Posted .

If you want a strong and healthy smile and a top-notch oral health, then it’s important to take good care of your teeth on a regular basis. In order to do so, you need to avoid enamel erosion.

Enamel erosion in Concord, Massachusetts, is a common dental issue that occurs when acid wears away your tooth enamel. This can result in tooth sensitivity and many other dental issues. So, in order to prevent enamel erosion, our Nicholas P. Kondon, DMD team encourages you to do the following things:

Eat acidic products with meals: It’s recommended to eat acidic foods with your meals. That way the other foods can neutralize the acid and the harmful particles won’t stay in contact with your teeth for long.

Drink water: If you do end up eating acidic foods and drinking acidic drinks, it’s best to wash the acid away with water. So, make sure you sip or drink water throughout the day.

Use a straw: Using a straw is very beneficial if you do end up drinking acidic drinks. The straw will send the beverage past your teeth and down your throat. This will reduce the amount of time the acid has to attack your smile.

Say no to bubbles: It’s best to stay away from carbonated drinks as much as possible. You can swap these beverages with water, milk or tea for healthier teeth.

Wait before brushing: Even though it’s your first reaction to brush after consuming an acidic product, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes. The acid can soften your tooth enamel, so brushing immediately can harm your smile.

Doing these things can help you avoid enamel erosion and they can also help you prevent tooth decay and other issues. For more information and details, please call our office today at 978.369.9090 and schedule an appointment with your dentist, Dr. Nicholas Kondon. We look forward to helping you!
